José Manuel Prieto
José Manuel Prieto was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1962. After finishing high school in 1980 he left Havana for the Russian city of Novosibirsk where he earned a degree in computer engineering. Prieto lived in Saint Petersburg for many years, where he started writing and publishing his first works.  

I n 1994 Prieto moved to Mexico and became a frequent contributor to Mexican newspapers, he also earned his PhD in History at the Universidad Autónoma de México. In 2004-2005, he was the Margaret and Herman Sokol Fellow at The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at The New York Public Library. Prieto has been the recipient of fellowships from the Sistema Nacional de Creadores, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.   

Jose Manuel Prieto is the author of several novels, non-fiction books, articles and essays, and also a translator of Russian literature to Spanish. His books include Nocturnal Butterflies of the Russian Empire, Enciclopedia de una vida en Rusia, El Tartamudo y la rusa (short stories), Treinta días en Moscú (travel account). Nocturnal Butterflies of the Russian Empire has been translated into more than seven languages and was highly commended by The New York Times, The New York Review of Book, Le Monde, Liberation, and The Times Literary Supplement. At the end of 2004 the prestigious Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung included it as one of the most important books of fiction of the year in Germany.  

Prieto has lived in New York with his wife Elena and their daughter Alicia since 2004. He is currently teaching creative writing at the University of Cornell.
